Hey Little Human!

Big Feelings, Little Humans: Why Children’s Mental Health Matters

As parents, we spend so much time making sure our children are healthy, safe, and cared for. We schedule doctor’s appointments, pack lunches, help with homework, and cheer them on through life’s milestones.

But what about the feelings they carry inside?

Children experience the same emotions that adults do—worry, sadness, frustration, fear, disappointment, loneliness, excitement, and joy. The difference is that children are still learning how to understand those feelings, express them, and cope with them.

Sometimes those emotions show up in ways we don’t expect.

A child who seems angry may actually be feeling anxious.

A child who is acting out at school may be struggling with changes at home.

A child who suddenly becomes clingy may be trying to make sense of something that feels overwhelming.

Children don’t always have the words to tell us what’s wrong. Instead, they communicate through behaviour, play, body language, and emotions.

Every Behaviour Has a Story

One of the things I love most about working with children is discovering the story behind the behaviour.

When we shift from asking, “What’s wrong with this child?” to “What might this child be trying to tell us?” everything changes.

Instead of seeing a child who is difficult, we begin to see a child who needs understanding.

Instead of focusing only on the behaviour, we become curious about the feelings underneath it.

That curiosity creates connection, and connection is where growth begins.

Why Play Matters

Children learn about the world through play.

They use play to practice new skills, process experiences, explore relationships, and express emotions that may be difficult to put into words.

That’s why therapy with children often looks different than therapy with adults.

Sometimes healing happens through a game.

Sometimes it happens while building a world in the sand tray.

Sometimes it happens through a story, a drawing, or a conversation that begins with a simple toy.

Play creates a space where children can safely explore their inner world while feeling accepted and understood.

You Don’t Have to Wait for a Crisis

Many parents wonder whether their child’s struggles are “serious enough” to seek support.

The truth is that counselling isn’t only for major crises.

Children can benefit from support when they’re navigating worries, friendship challenges, school stress, family changes, low confidence, grief, emotional regulation difficulties, or simply a season of life that feels hard.

Just like we don’t wait for a small scrape to become a serious infection before treating it, we don’t need to wait until a child is overwhelmed before offering support.

Sometimes a little help early on can make a big difference.

A Place for Big Feelings

At Hey Little Human, I believe every child deserves a space where they can feel safe, understood, and accepted exactly as they are.

A place where big feelings are welcome.

A place where curiosity is valued more than judgment.

A place where children can build confidence, resilience, and emotional skills that will support them for years to come.

Because every little human deserves to know that their feelings matter.

And every parent deserves support along the way.

Thank you for being here. I’m excited to share more resources, insights, and encouragement for parents and caregivers through this blog.

You’re not alone on this journey.
